General Teacher Burnout Statistics

1. 44% of the K-12 workers in the US say they always or very often feel burned out at work.

Teachers are the most burned out segment of the K-12 employees, with 52% saying that they are burned out.

What does it mean to be “burned out?” Well, it means feeling like your job is stressful and exhausting, but there is no way out. Teachers feel trapped in a cycle of overwork and exhaustion that leaves them with little time for themselves or their families.

A recent survey on work-related stress and exhaustion reveals that education workers hold the number one and two spots for the most burned-out professionals in the US.

College and university employees are just below K-12 employees, with 35% of them saying that they feel burned out all the time, or at least very frequently.

Professional services workers and government or public policy employees are next on the list, each with a share of 33% of their workforce reporting feeling burned out constantly or most of the time. 32% of retail workers and 31% of healthcare and law employees feel the same way.

(Gallup)

2. Each year, about 8% of teachers leave the profession.

It’s no secret that teaching is one of the most difficult jobs out there—and it’s also a profession that has a lot of turnover. The average annual attrition rate for teachers is 8%.

We’ve all been in the classroom.

Teachers are hardworking, dedicated professionals who are passionate about helping students learn. They often spend their own money on supplies and materials for their classrooms, they come up with creative ways to engage students in their lessons, and they spend hours outside of the classroom preparing new strategies to help students succeed.

But they’re also humans with lives outside of school—lives that sometimes get in the way of their work. And unfortunately, 8% of teachers leave the profession every year due to burnout or other factors.

(NASSP, NCES)

3. 44.6% of new teachers leave the profession within their first five years of teaching.

It’s no secret that teaching is one of the most difficult careers out there. The constant stress and pressure to perform can be overwhelming, especially for new teachers who haven’t yet learned how to navigate the system.

Research shows that nearly half of all new teachers leave within the first five years, with 9.5% leaving in the first year alone.

The reasons for this are many—but they’re often related to systemic issues within public education. Teachers are often underpaid and overworked, which can make it difficult to stay in the profession for long periods of time.

To put those numbers into perspective, consider this: if you were running a business and losing nearly half of your employees within the first five years on the job, you’d likely be out of business before too long.

(NASSP, UPenn)

4. 55% of female K-12 teachers report feeling burned out always or most of the time.

In comparison, 34% of female employees across all industries report feeling the same way, while female K-12 workers are in the middle with 47%.

On the other hand, 44% of male K-12 teachers say they are constantly burned out. The burnout rate for male workers across all sectors is considerably lower at only 26%, and the rate of male K-12 workers is 38%.

(AFT)

6. 91% of teachers say their job negatively affected their mental health in 2021.

According to 72% of teachers, organizing remote learning has been the number one contributor to their mental health adversity. Additionally, 90% of teachers report they have experienced increased levels of work-related stress in the past 12 months as well.

The main cause of the rising stress levels is the increased workload, as cited by 52% of teachers, while the consequences of the pandemic are an aggressor for another 34%.

Moreover, 24% of them stress about student behavior and well-being, 22% about student performance, and 11% about their own financial well-being.

(NASUWT)

7. 66% of teachers believe that their schools don’t have measures that help fight stress and burnout.

The stats show that even a larger percentage, or 78%, of teachers believe that their schools don’t provide staff members with a workspace that promotes wellbeing.

Another 66% report they don’t have an available counselor at the schools, while 63% say they don’t have a safe and comfortable space to take time out from the classroom.

(NASUWT)

Even 23% of K-12 members who are satisfied with their job plan to leave it in the following 24 months, and the percentage increases to 43% for those who are unsatisfied.

Finally, 53% of K-12 employees older than 55 plan on leaving their job in the next two years, while 42% of those under 40 and 28% of those between 40 and 54 plan on doing the same.

(AFT)

Additionally, 19% of K-12 employees feel no support or recognition from the administration, while 16% say that parents are unsupportive, uncooperative, and demanding.

(AFT)

The stats further reveal that 54% of them largely complain when they socialize with their colleagues, while 20% almost exclusively complain about work and can’t see solutions to their problems.

Combined with the other burnout causes that teachers face, it is not surprising to understand why 32% of teachers report being easily irritated by their students’ behavior, while 36% say they easily get irritated at home as well, in addition to their workplace.

(Not Waiting For Superman)

13. 78% of teachers say they are feeling job-related stress frequently.

The stats show that this is almost twice as much as the 40% of US adults who say they frequently feel job-related stress. Additionally, 27% of teachers show signs of depression, which is true for only 10% of the rest of Americans.

Teaching in-person and remotely at the same time is the number one stressor for 47% of teachers, while an additional 16% rank it as the second and 8% rank it as the third source of stress.

Statistics on the Impact of COVID-19 on Teacher Burnout

15. There is a 14% gap between the K-12 teachers’ burnout rate and the national average for all other professions.

While 44% of K-12 workers say they experience constant exhaustion at work, the average percentage of US employees across all sectors who feel this way is 30%.

The Covid pandemic has been detrimental to education workers, and the data backs it up.

A survey from March 2020, just before the pandemic kicked off, shows that the percentage of teachers who always or very often feel burned out at work was considerably lower at 36%. The national average across all industries at the time was only slightly lower at 28%, which means the gap between teachers and all other professions was much tighter at 8%.

(Gallup)

16. A total of 39% of K-12 employees report working longer hours than before the pandemic.

More precisely, 15% say they work significantly, and 24% somewhat more hours, while just 4% work fewer hours now than before Covid.

The main reason for their prolonged work is the extra hours they put into managing working remotely, as cited by 73% of the employees. Furthermore, 45% of them say that maintaining the social distance limitations causes everything to take much longer, while 42% attribute their longer hours to the increased number of meetings.

Additionally, 36% say they dedicate a considerable amount of time to making sure everything is cleaned and disinfected, and 32% suffer prolonged work because of delays caused by technical issues.

Additionally, this trend can be noticed among teachers of all ages and experience levels. Namely, 54% of those aged 50 and older and 56% of teachers younger than 50 consider leaving their profession.

Moreover, 50% of teachers with less than ten years of experience, 58% of those with between 11 and 20 years of experience, and 57% of those with more than 21 of experience say they are likely to leave earlier than planned.

Additionally, 34% of educators say they had to leave because one of their close ones had a high-risk condition under Covid-19, while 31% had such a condition themselves.

Unfortunately, toxicity in the workplace is commonplace. However, companies should take action to curb this toxicity because, at the end of the day, employees don’t care about their salaries or their number of vacation days as they care about workplace culture.

4. 28% of Americans state that a negative work environment makes them ill-tempered at home.

(SHRM)

Employees who are stressed at work commonly bring that stress when they go home. This spillover is pretty common, with almost half of American workers having to postpone important events in their personal life, such as birthdays, graduations, and family gatherings, to tend to the demands of their work.

5. 26% of American workers between 65 and 74 years old experience ageism at work.

(SHRM)

Ageism is a form of discrimination where an employee is subject to unfair treatment because of his or her age. In addition to the statistic above, 20% of those between the ages of 25 and 34 experience the same age-related discrimination.

However, it’s quite disheartening that the employment law in the United States only protects workers aged 40 and above from ageism because, realistically, employees of all ages have experienced discrimination and unfair treatment because of their age.

Ageism can happen at any time during someone’s employment, but it is most common during the application process.

6. An estimated three out of four working Americans believe that workplace culture depends on management.

(SHRM)

From an employee’s viewpoint, managers and executives hold the most responsibility in establishing a strong workplace culture. They expect managers to set a workplace’s tone, establish good values, and open channels of communication.

However, statistics show that one out of three (36%) US workers state that their managers are not knowledgeable about leading a team properly, and almost 30% of employees don’t trust that their managers will treat them fairly.

General Workplace Negativity Statistics

7. 98% of employees have experience with workplace negativity or incivility at one point.

(Harvard Business Review)

As it appears in this statistic, negativity in the workplace is commonplace, with nearly all employees experiencing it at one point in their working lives.

However, companies need to be able to distinguish the difference between a workplace with some rude people and one that’s systemically and endemically negative. The latter has a more toxic work environment with potentially dire consequences.

8. Executives and managers who work in Fortune 1,000 firms spend 13% of their working hours dealing with the consequences of workplace negativity.

(Harvard Business Review)

As expected, workplace negativity costs a lot of money. Human resource professionals even say that even just one incident of incivility can consume weeks of effort and attention.

In fact, managers and executives who work in Fortune 1,000 companies spend a good deal of their work hours (approximately seven weeks per year) repairing employee relationships and dealing with other consequences as a result of negativity in the office.

Additionally, things can get costly and messy when attorneys or consultants have to be involved in settling an incident.

9. Nine out of ten employees are more productive when they’re surrounded by positive people.

(Gallup)

Employees want a more positive work environment. I mean, who doesn’t, right? Employees who receive praise and recognition for their hard work are likely to be more productive and serve customers better.

Polls show that they’re more engaged at work than employees who are in a negative work environment where they are scarcely recognized for what they do.

10. 58% of employees who quit due to workplaces with a toxic culture said their managers caused them to leave their jobs.

(SHRM)

There is a direct correlation between workplace cultures and managers. With a lack of communication between workers and managers, things are not looking good.

However, managers have the biggest capacity to change the state of their workplaces. For example, they can build a positive workplace culture by listening to their workers, holding employees accountable for their actions, setting clear expectations, and verifying information when it’s not clear.

The Cost of Workplace Negativity

11. From 2014 to 2019, the turnover costs caused by employees leaving their jobs due to toxic workplaces caused by their managers reached $223 billion.

(SHRM)

A huge percentage (58%) of employees who leave their companies because of a toxic or negative work environment state that it was their managers who caused them to ultimately leave.

With a huge turnover cost caused by such workplaces, it’s definitely worth looking into why this happens and what can be done to address this.

For one, companies can conduct development programs for managers to help them hone their leadership skills and soft skills. They also need emotional intelligence to build high-performing and highly engaged teams. Leadership has to be strategic and intentional to keep turnover costs relatively low.

12. Negativity in the workplace costs businesses $3 billion annually.

(University of Southern Carolina)

Systemic negativity in the workplace is a major problem that no business should ignore or push under the rug. If left unaddressed, it results in financial consequences—to the tune of a whopping $3 billion per year!

That’s because maintaining a positive work environment is necessary for employee morale, which affects employee satisfaction and productivity.

13. 48% of employees who experience workplace negativity intentionally reduce their work effort.

(Harvard Business Review)

Having managers and co-workers with a negative attitude can quickly turn things around for an otherwise positive team. This can have tremendous effects on any worker.

For example, this statistic states that nearly half of those who work in a negative workplace purposely don’t work as hard as the negativity is too much for them to bear and it weighs them down.

14. 38% of employees who experience workplace negativity purposely reduce their work quality.

(Harvard Business Review)

Not only does productivity suffer, but quality also does as well. When a worker is persistently experiencing incivility or negativity in the office, they’re less likely to be engaged.

They spend time worrying about the negative incident they experienced, and this can cause anyone’s motivation to waver. As such, workers who have been exposed to workplace incivility are more likely to intentionally turn in subpar output.

15. Employees exposed to workplace negativity are 30% less creative than those who aren’t.

(Harvard Business Review)

According to an experiment conducted by a University of Florida professor, people who are treated rudely by others are less creative than those who aren’t. They generated 25% fewer ideas, and even if they came up with ideas, most of the ideas weren’t that original.

For example, when they were asked what they’d do with a brick, those who were exposed to negativity produced unimaginative ideas, such as “build a wall,” “build a house,” and the like. Meanwhile, others in the experiment provided answers like “sell it on eBay,” “decorate it and give it as a present,” and other similar answers.

16. A quarter of employees who were treated negatively take their frustrations out on customers.

(Harvard Business Review)

This is one of the biggest consequences of having a systemically negative workplace. Employees don’t feel valued; instead, they feel frustrated and are likely to take their frustration and disappointment out on customers. For client-facing jobs, this can prove to be detrimental to a company’s success.

Additionally, customers who witness companies maltreating their employees are likely to take their business elsewhere. For example, if a store manager publicly reprimands an employee, customers will likely find this offputting and walk out of the store without buying anything.

It mostly doesn’t matter if the employee was wrong or if they did something illegal; people just want to see workers in an establishment being treated poorly, regardless of the cause.

17. 12% of employees who are treated negatively have left their job.

(Harvard Business Review)

If you are treated with disrespect and incivility, you’ll eventually get to a point where you can’t take it anymore. When employees feel undervalued, disrespected, and unmotivated, they’re more likely to quit their jobs. Companies suffer as a result because increased employee turnover is quite costly.

18. 78% of employees who experience negativity in the workplace feel their commitment to the company declined.

(Harvard Business Review)

Along with a declining commitment to the company, output quality, performance, and productivity suffer as well.

That said, 66% found their performance to have declined as a result of incivility in the workplace, and 63% lost precious work hours from avoiding the person who mistreated them.

12 Brands Like Coach (Just As Sleek And Luxurious)

Brands Like Coach

Coach became one of the most recognized luxury brands in the world with its rise to popularity in the 1990s. However, this luxury brand was around for almost 50 years prior to its quick rise to fame.

This luxury brand began in 1941 as a family business in New York. Today, Coach is known for an assortment of clothing and accessories; however, it started as a brand focused on creating quality leather goods.

It was the family’s expertise in creating durable handmade luxury leather products that made them a household name in fashion with the brand’s famous Coach bags.

How Coach Became a Luxury Brand

In the 1990s, women (and men) around the world began carrying Coach bags as a sign of status and luxury. While the ‘90s started the Coach craze, it didn’t stop there. Over the years, Coach has only continued to grow in status and popularity.

Coach’s rise in popularity reflects the appreciation for the quality of craftsmanship and design by this brand. Moreover, the love of its classic style.

In addition, the brand’s endorsement by celebrities has also contributed to its popularity. Over the years, celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow, Selena Gomez, Michael B. Jordan, and JLo have endorsed Coach.

Between the quality of its products, the variety of classic designs, and its popularity among the elite, it is no surprise that people around the world want to own a piece of this legendary luxury brand.

Popular Coach Products

While a Coach bag is an ultimate symbol of fashion and status around the world, there are several other ways to sport the classic and distinctive Coach print. In addition to bags, Coach has a well-known luxury line of clothing, shoes, jewelry, watches, and other accessories.

Therefore, you can be a part of the Coach circle by grabbing any of their products. Whatever you choose, you can rest assured knowing you will be sporting something recognized around the world as stylish and luxurious.

Coach isn’t the only stylish luxury brand around the world though. In addition to Coach, there are several global brands that are also known for their timeless style and exceptional craftsmanship.

These other luxury brands reflect the same commitment to high-end fashion and durable products that Coach is known for. They also provide a range of prices, colors, and designs so that fashionistas from every walk of life can enjoy an experience with a brand like Coach.

Characteristics of Coach Brand

Coach

Before looking at what these other brands have to offer, let us take a look at some additional characteristics of the Coach brand.

As mentioned above, two key characteristics of the Coach brand are its commitment to quality craftsmanship and creating clothing and accessories that never go out of style.

In addition, Coach is recognized for its modern luxury style with a retro feel. This specific style is why Coach often appeals to career-oriented women in their 20s-40s. Providing a wide range of professional clothing that is still stylish.

An additional way that Coach appeals to professional women is by focusing on neutral and autumnal color palettes for most of their lines. This allows its customers to easily pair pieces for several classic looks. Therefore, providing its customers with more ways to wear its brand.

All of these characteristics play a part in making Coach the beloved brand that it is. These are also the characteristics that are reflected in other brands that make them comparable to Coach in many different ways.

High-End Fashion Brands Like Coach

Compared to many other brands, Coach is considered a luxury brand. However, compared to luxury European brands like Gucci, Dior, and Chanel, Coach falls into the high-end fashion category.

High-end fashion brands still offer luxury items, but at a more affordable price than the upper-level of luxury brands. The brand’s goal is to offer an affordable yet luxurious everyday experience for more people.

Like Coach, there are several other brands with this same goal. Moreover, these other high-end fashion brands offer many of the same benefits that Coach does.

1. Michael Kors

Michael Kors

Michael Kors is another well-known affordable luxury brand that caters to women and men. Known for its contemporary and trendy designs, this brand has a similar style to Coach. It even has a similar logo design on many products, using an MK emblem similar to the C emblem used by Coach.

In addition to its branding, Michael Kors often promotes clothing, bags, and accessories with similar color palettes as Coach. Often leaning towards more neutral colors that allow the brand to be timeless. However, this brand is also known for listening to what its customers want which often leads to clothing lines that reflect current trends.

Along with the similarities in design and quality, Michael Kors has a similar price point to Coach. Therefore, this brand is a great choice for those who already enjoy Coach but want to expand their collection to include other similar brands.

2. Marc Jacobs

Marc Jacobs

Compared to the other brands, Marc Jacobs is unique in that it started as a men’s line. It is also younger than other luxury and high-end fashion brands, having only been around since 1993.

Although it is a younger brand, it still reflects important characteristics that are seen in the Coach brand: a commitment to quality and fashion.

While Coach is often described as having a classic style with retro vibes, Marc Jacobs is known for having a grunge-inspired style. Therefore, while it is inspired by the past, Marc Jacobs is bolder in its brand. This is seen in the brand’s classic styles as well as its focus on popular trends.

Hence, this brand is a good choice for those who want a classic but edgier Coach brand.

3. Kate Spade

Kate Spade

Kate Spade is another brand that is newer compared to other brands. Like Marc Jacobs, Kate Spade also started in 1993. However, although they are a newer brand compared to Coach, Kate Spade made a name for itself in the same way that Coach did – with bags. Although over the years this brand has also expanded into shoes and accessories.

This family brand also shares the commitment to craftsmanship that Coach does. While there are many similarities, Kate Spade differs somewhat in the area of design. Kate Spade is known for being bolder with its designs and color choices. Therefore, this brand is an excellent choice for those who want the quality and durability of Coach but with more attention to bright colors and bold designs.

In addition, even though Kate Spade is known for the quality of its leather goods, this brand’s products tend to be more affordable than Coach items. Therefore, they are an excellent choice for those who aren’t quite ready to spend the luxury price tag on Coach products.

4. Tory Burch

Tory Burch

One of the newest high-end fashion brands to date is Tory Burch. This brand launched in 2004 in New York City and has grown to be a worldwide fashion brand.

While many other high-end fashion brands provide fashion designs for both men and women, Tory Burch is known for being committed to women’s fashion. Moreover, to use the brand as a way to empower other female entrepreneurs.

This commitment to female empowerment is seen in the array of designs that range from classic and timeless to bold and trendy. Like Coach, Tory Burch also demonstrates a commitment to quality. Moreover, creating designs in handbags, shoes, clothing, and accessories with features that appeal to all women.

Another great feature of Tory Burch is that while they maintain the high-end level of quality and design that Coach does, they present a more affordable product. This allows the brand to be available to more women seeking a luxury fashion experience.

5. Dooney & Bourke

Dooney & Bourke

Dooney & Bourke is a brand with a similar reputation to Coach that started by making quality leather products.

Today, the Dooney & Bourke name is mostly associated with quality leather handbags. However, its first products were a surcingle belt and traditional suspenders for men that were launched in 1975. After the brand saw success with these two products, they introduced bags six years later.

Like Coach, Dooney & Bourke has always been committed to providing their customers with the best craftsmanship possible.

Early on, Dooney & Bourke was able to give something to their customers that even Coach didn’t have – waterproof leather. In 1983 this brand took the quality of leather products to new heights when they launched their All Weather Leather handbag line. 100% leather bags that the water just rolls right off of.

While both brands have a history of providing quality handbags, a distinct difference is that Dooney & Bourke has kept bags as its primary focus. They do offer other accessories, but they have not ventured into the world of clothing the way that Coach has.

Shoppers who are looking for a bag comparable in price and quality to Coach will enjoy the assortment of choices by Dooney & Bourke.

6. Brahmin

Brahmin

Brahmin is a brand that is older than Coach but started with the same love of creating luxury leather products. Starting in 1882, this luxury leather brand was originally known for providing Boston’s elite with handmade luxury bags made locally in Massachusetts.

Today, the popularity of Brahmin bags has grown beyond the borders of Boston and the United States; however, it is still a brand rooted in a family business. This is reflected in its commitment to continuing to make many of its bags by hand in Massachusetts. Even with outsourcing some of the production to China, the same high-end Italian leather and commitment to quality craftsmanship is a part of every bag.

Although the majority of Brahmin bags are comparable in price to Coach, one unique thing about this brand is its commitment to making luxury bags affordable for more people. Therefore, they decided to partner with Dillard’s department store to sell an affordable luxury line.

Luxury Brands Like Coach

As mentioned above, although Coach is considered a luxury brand compared to other lower-end brands, it is only considered a high-end fashion brand compared to other luxury brands. The key difference between other luxury brands and high-end brands like Coach is the price.

Luxury brands have a higher price point. This price point is a reflection of exceptional craftsmanship and materials. In addition, it is also a reflection of the history associated with these brands.

While these luxury brands may be pricier than Coach, they are similar in that they meet (or exceed) the standards set by Coach. Therefore, if you love Coach and are ready to step into even more luxury, these brands are great choices.

7. Louis Vuitton

Louis Vuitton

A Louis Vuitton bag is even more recognized than a classic Coach bag. In fact, Louis Vuitton is known for creating the most famous bag in the world. While Louis Vuitton is known today for its easy-to-carry bags, this brand began with its primary product being travel trunks.

Since creating and selling its first travel trunks in France in 1854, the brand has grown from travel trunks to a full fashion brand. However, Louis Vuitton did not begin to stray from its roots of designing exceptional bags until it introduced its clothing line in 1997.

Compared to Coach, Louis Vuitton offers a similar style that is focused on classic styles. Moreover, following similar neutral color schemes that are easy to pair with one another and are truly timeless.

Although Louis Vuitton is more expensive than Coach, the price is reflective of the quality and history associated with a luxury brand. Louis Vuitton items, especially their bags, are known for lasting a lifetime.

8. Burberry

Burberry

When looking for similarities in style and design with Coach, Burberry is another great luxury brand choice. This brand takes a classic approach to fashion as reflected in its colors and styles. Burberry designs play with deep autumnal tones like Coach and many similar natural tones. One distinct and classic design that Burberry is known for is its plaid pattern.

This luxury brand is not only known for its notable plaid but as the inventor of waterproof fabric. Moreover, the creator of the trench coat- the epitome of perfect waterproof outerwear. Providing durable and classic designs since 1856, the innovative design of the trench coat is just one example of the quality provided by this brand.

If you are looking to explore an exceptional brand that will pair well with pieces you already have from Coach, Burberry is a great choice.

9. Gucci

Gucci

With a 20-year head start on Coach, Gucci has been considered an iconic luxury brand for over 100 years. Started in 1921 in Italy, Gucci has a similar history to Coach in that the brand also began by manufacturing luxury leather products.

Like fellow European luxury brand Louis Vuitton, Gucci’s first step into manufacturing was to create high-end luggage for wealthy Italians. Beyond creating luggage, Gucci also started by designing luxury equestrian products for the same consumers. The brand’s work with leather led to more products over the years, with a focus on creating shoes and handbags.

In contrast to Coach, which maintained a focus on leather for quite some time, Gucci used other high-end textiles (like silk and knitwear) in their designs early on.

Today, both Gucci and Coach offer clothing in an array of textiles from leather to cotton. While Gucci designs provide a similar classic appeal, the brand’s overall take on fashion is trendier (as a reflection of its European roots).

10. Prada

Prada

Prada is another Italian brand that began with a focus on luxury leather. The origin of Prada goes all the way back to 1913 with the creation of travel trunks (much like Gucci and Louis Vuitton). However, the brand that is popular today started in 1978 when Miuccia Prada took over the family business and shifted the focus towards easier-to-handle luxury travel bags.

Although the brand shifted towards smaller luggage in 1978, the move to handbags and backpacks in 1985 is what put them on the map in the fashion world. This shift aligned with other brands like Coach, which were also about to take off in the 1990s due to the popularity of bags in the fashion world.

While Prada has a history rooted in growth around the same product types as Coach, Prada is known for being more fearless when it comes to design. Therefore, while they offer a solid line of classic design pieces, they also play with a bolder and more innovative look. Thus, they are a great choice for those looking to add a bit of edge to their classic Coach style.

11. Chanel

Chanel

Created in 1910 in France, Chanel is like the design grandma to Tory Burch. It has been using fashion to empower and encourage women to be themselves for over 100 years. To this day, this luxury brand is considered one of the most classic fashion brands in the world for women.

Chanel is different from many other luxury brands in that it began with hats. Soon after, the brand began creating clothes for women. Over the years, it added accessories, perfumes, and makeup.

Compared to Coach, Chanel’s designs are somewhat different in style. However, they are similar in that they are also timeless pieces. The brand is known for inventing a classic suite (The Chanel Suite) for women and the little black dress. Two pieces that can be worn alone or paired with any other luxury item. Therefore, making this a great brand to mix and match with Coach.

12. Dior

Dior

Dior was started almost a century after many of the other European luxury brands. However, its start in 1946 is closer to the beginning of the creation of Coach in 1941. While Coach is an American brand, Dior was created in France. Today, both are global fashion brands.

Like Coach, Dior has a long history of celebrity endorsements. Actresses in Hollywood have worn Dior since the 1950s. It was Princess Diana that made the brand’s handbags popular though. In the mid-1990s, Princess Diana popularized the Dior leather handbags and made them a household name.

Those who love the quality leather found in Coach bags will love the same exceptional European leather in Dior bags. Moreover, Dior offers a more luxurious and elegant style in their bags that makes them perfect for special occasions.

Budget Friendly Brands Like Coach

While most fashionistas would love to buy only from luxury brands like the ones above, that is not always an option. Luxury brands are luxury for a reason – they offer the highest quality of craftsmanship and materials. However, that type of quality is reflected in the price.

Although Coach is more affordable compared to other luxury brands, it is still a brand that is considered pricey. Therefore, while some people may save up to invest in a classic Coach Bag – that may be the only Coach item they are able to purchase. Moreover, while you may love the look of Coach, you may simply not want to spend the money for the name brand.

Whatever the reason may be, you don’t have to go without great style because you are on a budget. There are several budget-friendly brands that offer a similar style to Coach.

  • Guess
  • Fossil
  • Calvin Klein
  • Tommy Hilfiger
  • Lucky

These five brands are great choices for shoppers who love the timeless and classic design of Coach. All these brands provide similar styles to Coach bags, clothing, and accessories. These brands provide style at a significant fraction of the price.

A better price doesn’t mean poor quality though. For example, while the bags sold by these bags are more affordable, many are still made with leather (but are typically manufactured in larger quantities with less attention to detail). The quality of leather may be different, but for the price, you still get a quality product you can enjoy.

Conclusion

One of the main things to consider when choosing a brand like Coach is the cost. All of the brands mentioned in this article offer similar design choices to Coach. Especially when looking for a bag that reflects the design and style of a classic Coach bag. Moreover, many of these brands offer similar choices in clothing and accessories.

Therefore, the choice is mostly about the price point. If you love Coach and are looking for more brands that offer a similar style with the same quality, look for another high-end fashion brand.

When you are ready to take the next step in fashion, explore what luxury brands have to offer. Although these brands are at the top of the price point, the products they sell are timeless pieces that will last through the ages.

Moreover, remember that style also doesn’t have to cost a lot. The budget-friendly brands mentioned earlier are all great places to get quality products for affordable prices.

There is no wrong choice when choosing a brand, as long as it meets your expectations for design, quality, and price.

How Does Tinder Make Money? Business Model of Tinder

How Does Tinder Make Money

Tinder is a popular online dating app and website. It reinvented the business of dating by coming up with the idea of swiping right or left to indicate interest.

Tinder primarily makes money off premium subscriptions. It also makes money through in-app purchases, Google Play downloads, and by selling banner advertising. The company also charges developers to create new apps that work with the Tinder API.

The company was founded by Sean Raad in 2012 at a hackathon held at Hatch Labs, a startup incubator, in West Hollywood. Tinder was originally called MatchBox, but the founders decided the name was too similar to Match.com. The co-founders and early employees renamed and rebranded the company. They kept the flame-themed logo for Tinder.

Tinder boasts over 75 million monthly users. In the first quarter of 2022, it had 10.7 million subscribers. This is far more than any other online dating app. In 2021, Tinder made $1.65 billion in revenue, three times more revenue than Bumble, its closest competitor. [1]

What is Tinder & How Does It Work?

Tinder is an online dating platform and app. Users join to meet like-minded people for romance and possible long-term commitments. Tinder is most popular with younger males. In the United States, 35% of its users are aged 18-24, and 75% of its users identify as male. [2]

Dating apps have become steadily more popular worldwide since 2016. In that time, dating apps have seen significant growth in both user base and revenue share. In 2021, there were 323 million users of dating platforms worldwide. [3] Dating app revenues reached $5.61 billion in 2021. [4]

Tinder and Badoo have vied for total global user share since 2015. Tinder is currently the most popular dating app in the North American and U.S. markets. Badoo has won the user base in Europe and South America.

Users use Tinder to browse potential matches based on factors like location and interests. The app uses geotagging to showcase matches a set distance away from the user. Users join looking for everything from casual hookups to potential marriage.

Users sign up on the website or download the app to their phones. They can use their phone number or email address to create a Tinder account. Users are encouraged to upload a selection of photos and provide a short bio.

After signing up, users can browse the profiles of other users, swiping right on profiles they like and swiping left on profiles they don’t. If both parties swipe right, a match has been made. Tinder was the first dating app to design and patent this swipe technology.

Users appreciate dating apps such as Tinder over traditional dating or more complicated dating apps because it is user-friendly. Since users don’t know if someone has swiped left on them, rejection is anonymous. It can be faster and easier to find a date on Tinder, particularly for younger users. Tinder claims that 1.5 million of its users go on dates every week.

Only 4% of Tinder users claim to be looking for a long-term relationship that might end in marriage. However, studies show that 13.6% of Tinder connections do end in marriage. [5] The app may have been particularly helpful to people during the Covid-19 pandemic. A whopping 40% of divorced, widowed, or single Tinder users found companions during the pandemic. [6]

Because Tinder is based on proximity, it has developed a reputation as a hook-up app and even a place to commit fraud. In 2022, Netflix released a documentary called The Tinder Swindler detailing the crimes of conman Simon Leviev. Leviev, born Shimon Hayut, used the app to meet women who he manipulated into financially supporting him.

Since Tinder was launched, the app has become a key part of many people’s social life. However, there is controversy over whether the app’s design facilitates connections or just browsing through profiles. Psychologists have even studied whether Tinder swiping might be addictive.[7]

Tinder skews younger than many other dating platforms. Around 38% of its users are between 15 and 24, and 45% of its users are between 25 and 34.[8]

Unfortunately for their partners, 30% of Tinder subscribers are married. While some might be in open or non-monogamous relationships with their spouses many might be using the app without their partner’s knowledge.[9]

Business Model of Tinder

The business model of Tinder is what is known as the freemium model. Users get basic features for free in order to incentivize a large number of people to use the app. This ensures a sizeable number of potential partners are available for users who sign up, which provides a larger potential dating pool.

Users are encouraged to upgrade to a subscription plan to access more features and functionalities. Tinder limits what features are available in the free plan to encourage users to purchase the premium services and enhance their experience even more.

Whether users are looking for a long-term relationship or a hookup, the ability to pay to see which potential matches like you or to have an unlimited number of likes on potential matches encourages many users to pay. Tinder has 10.7 million paying subscribers in the first quarter of 2022. [10]

Tinder earns most of its revenue through its tiered subscription offerings and in-app purchases like unlimited daily scrolling. Users can pay for individual services like Super Likes and Profile Boosts.

Tinder’s subscription plans are also more expensive for users who are aged 30 and older. This helps incentivize the use of these features by people who have less disposable income.

Although Tinder introduced many of the features that are now standard across similar dating apps and sites, the apps themselves are not significantly different in the features they offer.

Tinder competitors like Bumble and Grindr copied much of Tinder’s basic functionality and features, simply giving the options different titles. Bumble’s subscription tiers are titled Bumble Boost and Bumble Premium, while Tinder has three tiers, Plus, Gold and Platinum.

Tinder rival Bumble, which was founded by former Tinder VP Marketing Whitney Wolfe Herd, has attempted to differentiate itself with women by allowing them to message first in a potential match.

Tinder is owned by Match Group Inc., a conglomerate that also owns the matching services Match, Hinge, OkCupid, and Plenty of Fish. Match Group is a powerful player in the online dating market. The company owns and operates over 45 global dating companies. Its flagship app, Tinder operates in over 190 countries and 40 languages. Tinder’s largest user base is in the U.S., followed by the U.K.

Tinder holds 72% of the U.S. market share, easily beating rival Bumble at 19%.[11] Tinder has maintained its majority market share among U.S. dating apps for the past five years. However, as the user base of rivals, Bumble and Hinge has grown in that time, Tinder’s dominance has decreased. The company faces intense competition from Bumble, Hinge, and Badoo.

Tinder rival Bumble recently acquired its first subsidiary Fruitz, which has been described as a dating app for Gen Z. That could put it in a better position to compete against Tinder in the future.

Tinder’s business model has been very successful at generating increasing revenue. The company reported revenue of $1.65 billion in 2021, up from $1.36 billion in 2020.[12]

But the company also has significant expenses. These include personnel and employee-related expenses, credit card processing fees, advertising, administrative, and product development expenses. A global app like Tinder needs significant human resources to run smoothly.

Dating app companies also must invest a significant amount of money in advertising to compete in the crowded online dating marketplace. After expenses, Tinder’s parent company Match Group generated just $280 million in net income in 2021.[13]

How Does Tinder Make Money?

Tinder makes money in different ways. These are through its Tinder Plus, Tinder Gold, and Tinder Platinum subscriptions and its Super Like, Boost and Read Receipt features.

Tinder does not break down the sources of its revenue, so it’s unclear how much of it comes from the company’s separate income streams.

Tinder Subscriptions

Tinder makes most of its funds from subscriptions. While the platform is free to use, getting a subscription makes using the platform easier and gives you increased access to potential matches.

Tinder has three tiers of subscription: Tinder Plus, Tinder Gold, and Tinder Platinum. The free versions of the app only allow users to match and chat.

Tinder Plus

Tinder Plus allows users to:

  • Match, chat with and meet other Tinder users
  • Give out unlimited likes
  • Rewind forward or backward on previously liked or unliked users
  • Search in locations other than one’s home city
  • Hide advertisements

Tinder varies its pricing based on the page of the user. For users under the age of 30, Tinder Plus costs $4.99 for one month, $14.99 for half a year, and $19.99 for a year. For users 30 and over, Tinder plus costs $7.99 for one month, $23.99 for half a year, and $31.99 for a year.[14]

Many features extended by the Plus plan incentivize upgrading if a user wants to rewind a swipe or change locations

For example, a user might purchase a subscription if they accidentally swipe the wrong way on a promising match or if they want to meet people while traveling for work.

Tinder Gold

Tinder Gold allows users to access all features in the Tinder Plus tier, as well as:

  • Give out 5 Super Likes per week
  • Access 1 Boost per month
  • See who likes them
  • Receive new top picks every day.

For users younger than 30, Tinder Gold costs $14.99 for one month, $44.99 for half a year, and $59.99 for a year. Users older than 30 will pay $24.99 for one month, $74.99 for half a year, and $99.99 for a year. [15]

The additional features that Tinder Gold users can access encourage them to upgrade their subscriptions. For example, the ability to receive new top picks daily could be a selling feature for users eager to meet potential romantic matches quickly.

Tinder Platinum

Tinder rolled out its new top-level subscription plan, Tinder Platinum, in 2020. Along with all the features of Tinder Plus and Tinder Gold, subscribers receive the following benefits:

  • The ability to message before matching with another user
  • Likes and Super Likes are seen faster than those of non-Platinum users
  • The ability to see the likes they’ve given in the past week

1-month plan$19.99$29.99
6-months plan$59.99$89.99
12-months plan$79.99$119.99

For users younger than 30, Tinder Platinum costs $19.99 for one month, $59.99 for half a year, and $79.99 for a year. Users older than 30 will pay $29.99 for one month, $89.99 for half a year, and $119.99 for a year.

Users are incentivized to upgrade to Tinder Platinum with bonus features that subscribers in lower tiers do not receive. Messaging before matching and having their likes prioritized over those of other users could give them an edge in meeting potential matches. Tinder is the most popular dating app, and users may want to gain an edge in the dating competition.

Super Likes

Tinder sells some of its features separately. Users can purchase Super Likes individually to indicate to a match that the user has extra interest in them. Users purchase Super Likes for $8 for a pack of five, $30 for a pack of 25, and $60 for a pack of 60. [16]

Profile Boost

Users can purchase Boosts individually from their profile pages or their feeds. Boosts potentially put the user’s profile in front of more potential matches for a period of 30 minutes. Users purchase Boosts for $6.99 for one, $30 for a pack of five, and $50 for a pack of 10. [17]

Read Receipts

Read Receipts let users know whether a match has read their message yet. They can be purchased for $15 for a pack of five, $20 for a pack of ten, or $30 for a pack of 20. Users can opt out of allowing others to see their read receipts.

Tinder Funding, Valuation & Revenue

The Tinder brand is a subsidiary of Match Group, Inc. (MTCH), which is currently a public company trading on the NASDAQ exchange. It had a valuation as of August 2022 of $15.62 billion.

Prior to being bought by Match, Tinder raised $50 million in venture capital funding during three funding rounds.[18] Notable investors include Benchmark and AIC. [19]

Over the last four years, Tinder has greatly increased its revenue, growing from $1.15 billion in 2019 to $1.65 billion in 2021. However, parent company Match Group saw a 64.2% decrease in net income in 2020. [20]

Given the popularity of Tinder, that could be due to losses at some of Match’s other subsidiaries, or the company might be prioritizing expansion.

YearTinder Total RevenueMatch Group Total RevenueMatch Group Net income
2019$1.15 billion$2.05 billion$450 million
2020$1.36 billion$2.39 billion$160 million
2021$1.65 billion$2.98 billion$280 million

Is Tinder Profitable?

It is unclear if Tinder is profitable. Match Group reported a net income of $280 million in 2021. The company does not provide the net income of each of its subsidiaries.

Tinder’s total revenues have increased every year since its parent company Match Group launched as a public company in 2015. But, even though it generated $1.65 billion in gross revenue in 2021, it isn’t clear that means Tinder generated a profit.

The platform’s expenses could exceed its revenues, or the company could be investing in growth and still be pre-revenue.

Conclusion

Tinder has been around for a while now, but it’s still one of the most popular dating apps out there. Whether you love it or hate it, you have to admit that it has changed the way we date and find partners.

The app’s combination of gamification and social networking has made it one of the most popular online dating platforms in the world, and its business model shows that there is still room for innovation within the dating industry.

The future looks bright for Tinder as they continue to expand into new markets around the world while staying true to their core values: simplicity, fun, and ease of use.

We’d say that if you’re looking for love, you should definitely give them a try!
